One Last Taste of Summer with Angel’s Envy

By Michael Maynor

There is a particular hour this time of year when summer seems reluctant to leave.

The afternoon heat begins to soften. Shadows stretch a little farther across the porch. Somewhere between the workday and supper, there is time for a drink, a good chair and perhaps nowhere in particular to be.

Angel’s Envy has a name for that moment: the Daycap.

Think of it as the earlier cousin of the nightcap — a drink meant not necessarily to begin a long evening, but to mark the end of a day well spent.

It turns out that ritual may be finding a larger audience. Bacardi’s 2026 Cocktail Trends Report identifies what it calls an emerging “Afternoon Society,” with people increasingly choosing to gather, eat and enjoy cocktails earlier in the evening. Among younger legal-drinking-age consumers in the United States, 34 percent reported shifting their routines toward earlier evenings.

We can understand the appeal.

Not every good drink needs midnight attached to it.

Sometimes the better setting is five o’clock, sunlight through the trees, something on the grill and enough evening still ahead of you to enjoy it.

Bourbon Meets Peach

For its take on the Daycap, Angel’s Envy Global Brand Ambassador Angel Teta created the Angel’s Envy Peach Smash, a long bourbon cocktail built around one of summer’s defining Southern flavors.

At its heart is Angel’s Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Port Wine Barrels, joined by peach syrup, fresh lemon and sparkling Sicilian lemonade.

The result moves bourbon away from the fireside without disguising it. Peach brings ripe summer sweetness, lemon gives the drink brightness, and the sparkling lemonade stretches everything into a refreshing highball.

And then there is the garnish.

Mint would have been perfectly respectable.

Angel’s Envy adds a peach ring.

We approve.

There is something rather appealing about a cocktail that knows when not to take itself too seriously.

Angel’s Envy Peach Smash

Ingredients

1½ oz. Angel’s Envy Bourbon Finished in Port Wine Barrels
¾ oz. REÀL Peach Syrup
¼ oz. fresh lemon juice
3 oz. Fever-Tree Sparkling Sicilian Lemonade

Directions

Fill a highball glass with ice.

Add the Angel’s Envy Bourbon, peach syrup and fresh lemon juice and stir.

Top with Fever-Tree Sparkling Sicilian Lemonade.

Garnish with fresh mint and a peach ring.

The Last Light of Summer

We spend plenty of time at Feathers & Whiskey looking forward to autumn — sporting seasons, cooler evenings, tweed returning to the closet and the first fire of the year.

But there is no reason to rush the season along.

September still gives us warm afternoons, open porches and peaches enough to remind us where we have just been.

So perhaps the Daycap is less a cocktail trend than an old idea given a new name: finish the work, find your people, pour something worth lingering over and enjoy the hour before it disappears.

The leaves can wait a little longer.

For now, we’ll take the peach.
