Still Running: Secretariat’s Legacy Lives in the 2025 Kentucky Derby

By Robbie Perdue

It’s been 52 years since Secretariat thundered down the stretch at Churchill Downs, leaving hoofprints not just on the track, but on the very soul of American horse racing. That blazing 1:59 2/5 still stands as the fastest Kentucky Derby ever run — a time so mythical it almost belongs in the Book of Genesis.

But Big Red isn’t done running.

This year, as the gates fly open for the 2025 “Run for the Roses,” every single Thoroughbred in the field carries Secretariat’s blood. Let that sink in. Fifty-plus years later, the greatest racehorse in history isn’t just remembered — he’s represented.

A Bloodline That Changed Everything

Secretariat didn’t just win. He redefined what winning looked like.
He set records in all three Triple Crown races. He retired as a legend.
And he passed along more than just trophies — he passed along power.

Through sons like Storm Cat and A.P. Indy, through daughters who became foundation mares, Secretariat’s genetic fingerprint stretches deep into modern pedigrees. By 2025, his lineage is no longer a footnote — it’s the foundation.

Every horse stepping onto the track this May owes something to that fire-red colt with the monstrous stride, including the late Toby Keith’s racehourse “Render Judgment”.

Why It Still Matters

In a world obsessed with the next best thing, there’s something comforting — something Southern, even — about lineage. We value who raised you, who taught you, who gave you your grit. In that way, Secretariat feels more like a grandfather than a horse.

At Feathers & Whiskey, we talk a lot about legacy. It’s the threads passed down through storytelling, family hunts, cast iron seasoning, and country roads. Secretariat reminds us that legacy lives on not by standing still — but by running forward.

The 2025 Derby: More Than a Race

So when the bugle sounds and the silks flash in the sun, remember:
This isn’t just a field of horses.
This is a dynasty in motion.
It’s Big Red’s spirit carried by twenty beating hearts, surging down the same track where he made the world believe in miracles.

Secretariat may be gone, but he’s never left.
He’s still running.
And we’re still watching.
