Fall 2026
To Southern Autumn, and the Beauty of Change.
There is something about this season that always feels like a return. The leaves begin to turn, reminding us that change does not always mean loss; sometimes it is simply another kind of beauty. The evenings come earlier, lamps stay on a little longer, and the things we have missed through the heat of summer begin finding their way back into our lives. A favorite jacket. A book beside the chair. Coffee on a cool morning. A return to the deer stand and the familiar sporting traditions that come with the season.
That same feeling runs through this issue. We move from the comforts of the Southern home to trout water in the Spanish Pyrenees, from a haunted hotel room in Chattanooga to the grouse moors and tweed mills of Scotland. We remember marsh-hen tides on the Carolina coast, listen again to John Coltrane, and return to a novel that first showed a boy from rural North Carolina that the world was much larger than the place he knew.
Perhaps that is what autumn does best. It reminds us that adventure does not always mean leaving home, and home does not mean standing still. Sometimes the road takes us halfway around the world. Sometimes it simply brings us back to the porch, the bookshelf, the field, or the people and traditions that shaped us.
So settle in for a while. Pour something good, turn on a little jazz, and enjoy the season with us.
