Small batch. Small batch bourbon. Small batch rye. Small batch single barrel small batch. It sounds good, doesn’t it? Makes you think of a craftsman leaning over a copper pot, tasting from barrel number seven, nodding slowly because this one is ready.

Here’s what “small batch” actually means: whatever the distiller wants it to mean.

The federal government has never defined the term. There is no TTB regulation that says how many barrels qualifies as small, or what production cap separates a batch from a run from a vatting. Nothing. You could make three barrels of whiskey, put “small batch” on the label, and be telling the truth. You could make three thousand barrels, put “small batch” on the label, and also be telling the truth.

Jack Daniel’s uses the phrase. They make their whiskey in a facility that produces hundreds of thousands of barrels a year. Their rickhouses could swallow a downtown block. Is that small? Compared to Budweiser, sure. Compared to a craft distiller in Bardstown making twelve barrels a season? Not even close.

And here’s the uncomfortable part: the guy making twelve barrels probably needs the “small batch” label more than Jack does. He doesn’t have a century of brand recognition. He doesn’t have a gift shop on a tourist trail. He’s gambling his savings on corn and rye and warehouse space, and “small batch” is the one tool he has to signal that his whiskey is made differently. The problem is that the same tool works just as well for the billion-dollar operation.

So how do you know what you’re actually getting? Stop reading the front label. Flip it over.

Look for the distillery name and address. If it says “bottled by” instead of “distilled by,” you’re probably drinking sourced whiskey. That’s not automatically bad — some of the best bottles on the market are sourced — but it means somebody else made it and somebody else decided what “small batch” means. Look for barrel counts in the fine print or on the distillery’s website. A distiller who’s proud of his scale will tell you. A distiller who’s hiding something will lean on the marketing language.

Ask your liquor store guy — the one who actually drinks what he sells. He knows which bottles are trading on language and which ones earned it. The sourced bottles that taste incredible will be the ones he points you to without being asked.

The best whiskey I’ve ever had came from a label I’d never heard of. It was a store pick from a shop in Louisville, hand-selected by a guy who looked like he’d rather be fishing. The bottle said nothing about “small” or “batch” on the front. It just said the distillery name, the proof, and the barrel number. And it tasted like someone cared about every step.

That’s the thing about good whiskey. It doesn’t need to tell you it’s good. It proves it.

Drink what tastes good. Not what sounds good.

Don’t buy the words, buy the whiskey.
