Most people know the moments that defined America\u2019s independence\u2014the names, the signatures, the story as it\u2019s been told for generations. What fewer people realize, even here in North Carolina<\/span><\/span>, is that the first formal call for independence didn\u2019t begin in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n

It began in Halifax<\/span><\/span>.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Set near the fall line where the Coastal Plain meets the Piedmont, along the banks of the Roanoke River, Halifax is a place that doesn\u2019t call attention to itself. But it was here, in April of 1776, that the first call for independence from England took shape through what would become known as the Halifax Resolves<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Long before there was a United States, before independence had a name or a shape, a decision was made here. On April 12, 1776, North Carolina became the first colony to formally call for separation from England.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The resolves themselves were not a declaration of independence, at least not in the way we think of it today. They were instructions clear and deliberate directing North Carolina\u2019s delegates to the Continental Congress to support a vote for independence.<\/p>

In simple terms, it was the first official step.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This year marks 250 years since that decision was made. For the first time in that span, the original documents have returned to Halifax<\/span><\/span>, where they will remain on display through October.<\/p>

It\u2019s not often history returns to the place it began.<\/p>

For something so often reduced to a date on a flag, it\u2019s a rare opportunity to stand in the presence of the words themselves\u2014words that helped set a course long before a nation was fully formed.<\/p>

For those who can\u2019t make the trip, the documents are also preserved through the National Archives<\/span><\/span> in Washington, offering another way to experience a piece of that history.<\/p>
