The smell of tilled soil, the hum of bees coming back to life \u2014 and the irresistible urge to bring home a cardboard box full of peeping fuzzballs from the feed store.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"460\" data-end=\"481\">One year, I gave in.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"483\" data-end=\"790\">During <strong data-start=\"490\" data-end=\"504\">Chick Days<\/strong> at our local feed store, I wandered in for garden seed and walked out with a handful of tiny future egg-layers, a sack of <strong data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"648\">Start &amp; Grow feed<\/strong>, and a grin I couldn\u2019t wipe off. If you\u2019ve ever raised chickens \u2014 or dreamed about it \u2014 you know the feeling. If not, well&#8230; you\u2019re overdue.<\/p><h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"792\" data-end=\"820\"><strong data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"820\">Choosing Your Breeds<\/strong><\/h3><p class=\"\" data-start=\"821\" data-end=\"990\">Picking out chicks is a little like picking out horses at a fair \u2014 it\u2019s half practical, half falling in love.<br data-start=\"930\" data-end=\"933\" \/>Here are a few breeds you\u2019ll want to keep an eye out for:<\/p><ul data-start=\"992\" data-end=\"1391\"><li class=\"\" data-start=\"992\" data-end=\"1056\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"994\" data-end=\"1056\"><strong data-start=\"994\" data-end=\"1015\">Rhode Island Reds<\/strong> \u2013 Hardy, friendly, and laying machines.<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1057\" data-end=\"1115\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1059\" data-end=\"1115\"><strong data-start=\"1059\" data-end=\"1078\">Buff Orpingtons<\/strong> \u2013 Fluffy, golden, and sweet-natured.<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1116\" data-end=\"1205\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1205\"><strong data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1134\">Barred Rocks<\/strong> \u2013 Striped like jailbirds, but great layers and personalities to match.<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1206\" data-end=\"1306\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1208\" data-end=\"1306\"><strong data-start=\"1208\" data-end=\"1225\">Easter Eggers<\/strong> \u2013 These beauties lay green or blue eggs, just for a little magic in your basket.<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1307\" data-end=\"1391\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1391\"><strong data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1321\">Leghorns<\/strong> \u2013 Flighty, but if you want pure egg production, they\u2019re hard to beat.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1393\" data-end=\"1487\">Start small. It&#8217;s the way they turn <strong data-start=\"2419\" data-end=\"2479\">kitchen scraps and garden waste into fertilizer and eggs<\/strong>.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2482\" data-end=\"2577\">Leftover salad? Gone.<br data-start=\"2503\" data-end=\"2506\" \/>Pea pods and carrot tops? Demolished.<br data-start=\"2543\" data-end=\"2546\" \/>Wormy tomatoes? Chicken caviar.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2579\" data-end=\"2723\">They&#8217;re nature\u2019s recyclers \u2014 and they&#8217;ll follow you around with the devotion of a Labrador retriever if they think you\u2019ve got a handful of corn.<\/p><hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2725\" data-end=\"2728\" \/><h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2730\" data-end=\"2774\"><strong data-start=\"2734\" data-end=\"2774\">The Full Circle of Life (and Supper)<\/strong><\/h3><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2776\" data-end=\"2974\">Raising chickens keeps you connected \u2014 to the land, to the seasons, to your food. And when your hens eventually slow down their laying (after a few good years), you\u2019ll have another decision to make.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2976\" data-end=\"3145\">Some folks keep their old girls as beloved pets. Others?
