Among the many places that honored him, one town stood out in a unique way: <strong data-start=\"603\" data-end=\"695\">Fayetteville, North Carolina\u2014the only city named for Lafayette that he actually visited.<\/strong><\/p><h3 data-start=\"699\" data-end=\"734\"><strong data-start=\"703\" data-end=\"732\">A City Named in His Honor<\/strong><\/h3><p data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"1091\">Founded in 1783, Fayetteville was the first town in the United States to be <strong data-start=\"812\" data-end=\"835\">named for Lafayette<\/strong>, reflecting the deep admiration Americans held for the French general. Unlike other Revolutionary War heroes, Lafayette had not only fought for American independence, but had also <strong data-start=\"1016\" data-end=\"1089\">risked his fortune, political standing, and personal safety to do so.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"1093\" data-end=\"1472\">By the time of his 1824-1825 tour, Lafayette was the last surviving <strong data-start=\"1161\" data-end=\"1202\">Major General of the Continental Army<\/strong> and had become a symbol of the enduring Franco-American friendship. When he arrived in the town center, <strong data-start=\"1772\" data-end=\"1905\">hundreds of elegantly dressed women hurried through muddy streets, undeterred by the weather, determined to get a glimpse of him.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"1909\" data-end=\"2455\">Lafayette was <strong data-start=\"1923\" data-end=\"1966\">escorted to the front of the City Hotel<\/strong>, where he was received by <strong data-start=\"1993\" data-end=\"2017\">Chief Justice Toomer<\/strong>, who delivered a stirring speech on liberty and democracy. <strong data-start=\"2077\" data-end=\"2142\">The orator praised Lafayette\u2019s lifelong dedication to freedom<\/strong>, recalling his role not only in the American Revolution but also in the French Revolution and his unwavering belief in human rights. The speech emphasized the difference between America\u2019s <strong data-start=\"2331\" data-end=\"2390\">self-governance and the struggling monarchies of Europe<\/strong>, reinforcing Lafayette\u2019s lasting influence on the world stage.<\/p><p data-start=\"2457\" data-end=\"2842\">After his warm welcome, <strong data-start=\"2481\" data-end=\"2532\">Lafayette was taken to the home of Duncan McRae<\/strong>, where he stayed as an honored guest. Town leaders told him, <strong data-start=\"2594\" data-end=\"2708\">\u201cYou are here in our town, in your house, in the midst of your children. Dispose of everything as you please.\u201d<\/strong> The statement reflected the deep affection Americans felt for Lafayette\u2014he was more than a military hero; he was considered family.<\/p><h3 data-start=\"2844\" data-end=\"2897\"><strong data-start=\"2848\" data-end=\"2895\">The Military Tribute &amp; Lafayette\u2019s Farewell<\/strong><\/h3><p data-start=\"2899\" data-end=\"3335\">Despite the relentless rain, <strong data-start=\"2928\" data-end=\"2978\">volunteer militia companies refused to disband<\/strong>, standing at attention outside the McRae home to honor Lafayette through the night. As dawn broke and the general prepared to leave, <strong data-start=\"3112\" data-end=\"3193\">he stepped down from his carriage and shook hands with every soldier present.<\/strong> The gesture sparked <strong data-start=\"3214\" data-end=\"3242\">an outpouring of emotion<\/strong>, as citizens cheered and waved farewell, knowing they were witnessing a moment of history.<\/p><p data-start=\"3337\" data-end=\"3781\">Lafayette\u2019s visit to Fayetteville was <strong data-start=\"3375\" data-end=\"3404\">brief but deeply symbolic<\/strong>. Unlike the larger celebrations in cities such as New York, Boston, and Philadelphia, his stop in Fayetteville was a <strong data-start=\"3522\" data-end=\"3586\">humble yet heartfelt tribute from a town that bore his name.<\/strong> His personal interactions with the people, <strong data-start=\"3630\" data-end=\"3779\">his willingness to brave the rain and mud to greet them, and his final handshake with every soldier made an indelible mark on the town\u2019s history.<\/strong><\/p><h3 data-start=\"3783\" data-end=\"3840\"><strong data-start=\"3787\" data-end=\"3838\">250 Years Later: Remembering Lafayette\u2019s Legacy<\/strong><\/h3><p data-start=\"3842\" data-end=\"4182\">As we mark <strong data-start=\"3853\" data-end=\"3895\">250 years since Lafayette\u2019s Grand Tour<\/strong>, Fayetteville continues to honor its connection to the Revolutionary War hero.
